The Scarlet Letter is a romance novel that was first published in 1850 and was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
It takes place 200 years before the book was written and follows the main character Hester Prynne as he engages in an affair and has a daughter with the other woman.
Readers are taken on a journey that explores the feelings of guilt and the act of repentance that the main character experiences.
It also shows the treatment of women who have children out of wedlock and/or with an unknown father at that time too.
As the book looks at religious and sociological aspects it of course drew in criticisms as this was an uncomfortable subject at the time.
Some people feel that the book is a nod to the original Adan and Eve story from the bible, featuring a male and female character experiencing guilt.
First-edition copies of The Scarlet Letter are sought after in today’s world and copies have been known to go for almost $20k.
